Whisky Rebels for over 30 Years: The Story of Murray McDavid

Sep 30, 2025 | News

The 11th prime number. The atomic number of the element gallium. The number of letters in the Macedonian alphabet. This year Murray McDavid turns 31!

From our pioneering beginnings on Islay in the 1990s to our newest adventures in Speyside, it’s been a journey fuelled by bold ideas, exceptional casks, and a restless drive to do things differently.

So, in honour of our birthday, let’s take a stroll through the milestones, moments, and maverick moves that have shaped Murray McDavid into the whisky-maker you know today.

From Vision to Vanguard (1994–2000)

Founded in 1994 by London wine merchants Mark Reynier and Simon Coughlin, teamed up with Springbank’s Gordon Wright; Murray McDavid was born from a passion for casks and maturation, and a rebellion against the ordinary.

The name of the brand pays tribute to Mark Reynier’s grandparents, Harriet Murray and Jock McDavid, symbolising a legacy built on heritage and innovation. From the outset, our focus was unmistakable: to master the Art of Maturation through innovative cask use from respected provenance. We set out to pioneer new approaches that elevate the untapped flavours of Scotch whisky in bold new ways.

Bruichladdich Revival & Artful Expansion (2000–2012)

Our daring vision materialised in 2000 when the Murray McDavid Team revived the then-closed Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay — a landmark moment shaped alongside Master Distiller, Jim McEwan. Bruichladdich emerged as a thriving distillery and became central to our creative expansion and maturation philosophy.

This period defined us as more than bottlers — we were pioneers, reshaping the independent whisky landscape.

Transitions & Renewed Focus (2012–Present)

In 2012, Rémy Cointreau acquired Bruichladdich (and originally, Murray McDavid alongside it). Shortly after, Murray McDavid was sold to Aceo Ltd, a respected Scotch whisky broker — pledging to remain faithful to its founding ethos. We proudly continue as part of the Aceo family.

Today, our spirit matures in around 70,000 casks, housed in traditional warehouses across three sites in Speyside: Coleburn Distillery, Royal Brackla Distillery, and Kinloss. Each location brings its own character, enriching our whiskies through time-honoured Scottish maturation.

The MMD Revival (2015)

In 2015, Aceo Ltd’s Edward Odim and Dean Jode took the first bold steps to revive the Murray McDavid brand, expanding our family of Scotch whiskies to include not only single malts, but also single grains, blended malts and adventurous blended Scotch whiskies.

The rebrand was as daring as the drams themselves. Our whiskies were packaged in striking metallic tins, a sharp move away from tired traditions and towards a look that reflected the trailblazing spirit of Murray McDavid. This new chapter set the tone for the vibrant, boundary-pushing whiskies we continue to share today.

Working with the Houses of Parliament (2020 – Present)

In 2020, Murray McDavid was honoured to be chosen to supply the ‘Speaker’s Dram’ to commemorate the new presiding officer of the House of Commons. In a blind tasting at Westminster, led by drinks experts and the newly appointed Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, our 12-year-old Glen Moray single malt emerged as the winning whisky.

Elegant and refined, this dram, Speaker Hoyle’s Select carried notes of sweet malt, rich honey and lemon biscuit — a style perfectly suited to such an esteemed occasion. For over 40 years, each Speaker of the House has selected a Scotch whisky to share with MPs, guests and international visitors. We’re proud that Murray McDavid became part of this distinguished tradition.

Since then, we’ve gone on to win another tender with a blended Scotch whisky, The Parliamentarian. These historic and prestigious selections are always awarded through a blind tasting process, judged by a panel of drinks experts — and once again, Murray McDavid came out on top. We were then entrusted with creating special releases for the House of Commons, including Point of Order and the Elizabeth Tower, further cementing our place in this remarkable tradition.

A Fresh Look for a Bold Brand – The Rebrand (2022)

As part of our ongoing celebration (and in time for marking three decades of whisky craftsmanship), Murray McDavid unveiled a bold new visual identity in 2022 — our first major redesign in eight years. We seized the opportunity to modernise and elevate our presentation, while staying true to the artistry and authenticity at our core.

Here’s the evolution:

  • Sleek bottle redesign: A new silhouette that communicates contemporary elegance.
  • Refined packaging: We transitioned from traditional tin tubes to recyclable cartons, reflecting our intensified focus on sustainability.
  • Bold new labels: Clean, confident designs that underscore the brand’s craftsmanship and daring spirit. The rebrand not only boosted shelf presence but also aligned with our eco-conscious choices — reinforcing our unconventional, bold-spirited exuberance.

The 2022 rebrand didn’t just refresh aesthetics — it reaffirmed our commitment to innovation, environmental responsibility, and staying ahead of trends without losing the essence of what makes Murray McDavid unmistakable.

The Introduction of Cask Craft (2022)

In 2022, we proudly unveiled our Cask Craft range – a collection designed to open the door to the world of Scotch whisky for newcomers, while still offering plenty for seasoned whisky lovers to enjoy.

Crafted from single malts sourced across Scotland, the Cask Craft range celebrates the incredible impact that different casks have on flavour. Each expression is artfully matured in a variety of wood types, from the classics like Sherry, Bourbon and Port, to more adventurous finishes such as Marsala and Madeira wine casks.

Cask Craft was created as Murray McDavid’s discovery range, focusing on flavour exploration and approachability. Whether you’re discovering Scotch whisky for the first time or you’ve been enjoying it for years, the collection makes it easy to experience new flavour combinations and understand how cask types shape the character of a dram.

It’s a range that embodies what Murray McDavid does best: showcasing the Art of Maturation, while inviting everyone, from novices to enthusiasts, to join the journey.

The ULTRA Collection – Our Pinnacle Release (2024)

In 2024, we invited special guests within the whisky industry to Edinburgh’s prestigious Signet Library to unveil the Murray McDavid ULTRA Collection – our most exclusive and ambitious series to date. This limited range showcases the rarest, oldest, and most exquisitely matured whiskies in our warehouses, each one a masterpiece of time and craftsmanship.

The debut line-up included:

Caperdonich 1972 – 50 Years Old: A remarkable single malt from a lost distillery, aged half a century and finished to perfection.

Glen Scotia 1991 – 33 Years Old: Maturation elevated with a rare Vosne-Romanée Pinot Noir cask from Burgundy.

Macallan 1993 – 30 Years Old: A luxuriously rich expression matured in hand-selected sherry wood.

Every bottle in the ULTRA Collection is released in a bespoke presentation case, reflecting not just the rarity of the whisky, but the artistry that defines Murray McDavid. For collectors and connoisseurs alike, ULTRA is more than a release – it is a celebration of our maturing stock at its absolute peak.

Reviving a Sleeping Giant – The Dallas Dhu Distillery Project (2024 – Present)

One of the most exciting chapters in our recent history began when our parent company, Aceo Ltd, announced the revival of the historic Victorian Dallas Dhu Distillery. Built in 1898 and silent since 1983, this Speyside icon is set to return to life, combining heritage, sustainability, and a world-class visitor experience.

As Edward Odim, Aceo’s Managing Director, said:

“Our vision is to make Dallas Dhu one of the leading, must-see whisky distilleries in Scotland, giving visitors a unique, close-up experience of whisky making. The aim is to breathe life back into the distillery by first getting the original equipment working and traditional whisky distilling going once again.”

The project will be more than a return to whisky production—it’s about creating a vibrant cultural and educational hub.

Plans include:

  • Restoring and operating the original distilling equipment.
  • Using sustainable technologies to minimise environmental impact and enhance local biodiversity.
  • Building a state-of-the-art visitor centre with exhibition spaces, a museum, a café, and a restaurant.
  • Interactive experiences such as a working malt floor, a cooperage display, and even a virtual reality whisky journey.

Dallas Dhu will also serve as a gathering place for the wider community, with events ranging from art exhibitions and concerts to traditional cèilidhs. This revival promises not only to preserve an important piece of whisky history, but also to bring jobs, tourism, and renewed energy to the Speyside region.

For us at Murray McDavid, seeing Dallas Dhu come back to life is a powerful reminder that while we always look forward, we remain deeply rooted in Scotland’s whisky heritage.

The Old Bank Whisky Shop – A New Speyside Landmark (2025)

In 2025, we opened the doors to The Old Bank Whisky Shop at The Old Bank in the historic town of Forres, right in the heart of Speyside. Housed in the former Bank of Scotland building (est. 1852), this new home for Murray McDavid is more than just a shop — it’s a celebration of whisky heritage, community spirit, and the joy of sharing a dram.

The shop builds on our deep roots in the area. Alongside our maturation warehouses at Coleburn, Royal Brackla, and Kinloss — and our plans to revive the nearby Dallas Dhu Distillery — this venture is part of our mission to make Forres an unmissable whisky destination.

Inside, visitors will find:

  • A curated range of fine Murray McDavid whiskies and Aceo Spirits.
  • Exclusive tasting experiences led by our whisky experts.
  • The chance to fill your own bottle direct from the cask.
  • A private events space for special gatherings.

Whether you’re a local whisky lover or a visitor exploring Speyside, the Murray McDavid Whisky Shop offers a warm welcome and an authentic taste of our craft. From exclusive bottlings to hands-on experiences, it’s a place to discover, learn, and connect over Scotland’s national spirit.

31 Years Young!

If 31 years has taught us anything, it’s that the adventure never stops — it only gets more interesting. We’ve gone from maverick bottlers on Islay to proud custodians of Speyside landmarks, from reviving distilleries to launching whiskies that make collectors’ hearts skip a beat. And yet, for all we’ve achieved, we feel like we’re only just stretching our legs.

So, here’s to the next decades of daring maturation, unexpected releases, and maybe a few more rebellions along the way. After all, if this is what we’ve done in our first 31 years, just imagine what’s coming next. Slàinte!
